Learning Support
Hillcrest is an inclusive school, where all young people are entitled to an education that enables them to make progress, and to achieve their best, becoming confident individuals who live fulfilling lives. In order to do this, we meet the requirements of the 0 to 25 SEND Code of Practice (2014).
In Year 7, we identify the additional needs of students from information and results provided by primary schools and the completion of tasks focusing on literacy and numeracy skills. Your child may then be put at a stage of SEN and class teachers will put in place early intervention. Should progress still be a concern, your child will then be placed at SEN stage 1 or 2 and further support will be put in place.
Such support may take the form of small group programmes such as ‘Read, Write, Inc’, in-class Teaching Assistant support, precision teaching or pre-tutoring. Additionally, all students in Key Stage 3 follow the ‘Accelerated Reader’ programme.
In Key Stage 4, students with SEN will have the opportunity to follow a GCSE programme tailored to meet their needs.
Key staff will work together with students on their pupil profile in consultation with you. Your child’s pupil profile will give information regarding her strengths and difficulties and her short-term targets. We understand that you know your child best and firmly believe that school and home should work closely together and at every stage; your views will be taken into account through meetings and conversations with the SENDCo.
Further support with homework is offered at lunchtime and after school and is also provided for students who need additional help when English is not their first language.

Complaints Procedure
We endeavour to ensure that pupils with SEND are provided with the necessary support to progress. We understand that the most important part of this is high-quality teaching to enable children to have access to the curriculum and enjoy and achieve. If a parent/carer is concerned that their child is not making the appropriate academic progress, they should contact the school by the following means:
