TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY TO HILLCREST SCHOOL (SEPTEMBER 2023)

Dear Year 6 students

We are delighted that you have chosen to join Hillcrest School in September 2023.

At Hillcrest School, we pride ourselves on the care and attention that we provide for our students, particularly those joining us in Year 7. Transition is a nerve-racking time, for both students and parents. We understand that starting secondary school can be very exciting yet, a little daunting experience for many students. At Hillcrest School, we work tirelessly to provide a smooth transition, with an outstanding provision, within our Year 7 Curriculum and Pastoral Teams.

As part of the induction process, students will be invited into school to attend an induction meeting in May and participate in a full induction day in July.  During these visits students will have the chance the to meet key staff at Hillcrest School, as well as be involved in a tour of the school and participate in several lessons and activities.

In addition, we have created a comprehensive on-line transition package to support all year 6 students and their families at this important time. Our school website has a wealth of important and useful information, so please take the opportunity to look around. You will primarily find important information about Year 7 transition in this section of the website - a place we have created for information to hopefully make your transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible.

Please take time to watch the videos key members of our staff have prepared to introduce themselves to you. These videos have been prepared by members of the senior leadership team, year 7 tutor team and safeguarding team. Each member of staff has explained their role in the school and the part they will play in helping you to settle into life at Hillcrest school. Other members of staff, including Curriculum Managers for all subjects and members of the support team, have prepared powerpoints to introduce themselves to you and explain their roles in school. We would encourage you to complete our ‘Which member of staff?’ quiz to see what you can remember about members of staff who will help you in September and beyond. We have also added a number of other activities below that we would like you to complete and email to year6@hillcrest.bham.sch.uk.

We have also added on electronic copy of our Year 6 Summer Homework booklet. We will send a paper copy of this booklet to you in the post just before the summer holidays. The booklet has tasks set by each department to help you prepare for lessons in September. We would encourage you to complete as many of the activities as you can in this booklet and bring it to school on your first day in September. You will earn a ‘Getting It Right’ bonus point for each task you complete. If you complete every task your name will be entered into a special prize draw at the end of the first week at school in September.

Year 7 is certainly an exciting year with plenty for you to look forward to. We look forward to welcoming you to our Year 7 Hillcrest family in September. If you have any questions about he transition process, please feel free to email year6@hillcrest.bham.sch.uk and we will endeavour to reply as quickly as we can.

Thank you

Immunisations Message to Parents/Carers

Dear parents/Carers,

Immunisations
Please see below a message that Birmingham City Council has asked all Secondary schools to share with parents and carers:

'Your child will be learning and socialising with more children when they start their new school and could be at risk of catching preventable diseases if they haven’t had all their childhood jabs. If you are not sure if your child has had all their routine vaccinations, check their personal health record (Red Book) or contact the GP surgery. To get the best protection for your child, they need to have had two doses of MMR vaccine.

For a checklist of the vaccines and the ages at which they should ideally be given visit www.nhs.uk/vaccinations'

Kind regards
