Background:
The Girls Together project brings together inactive girls aged 8-16 within/across communities through positive sport experiences, to increase physical activity and to build confidence and physical literacy. Specifically, we will engage girls from culturally diverse communities and low-income families.
We do this through the equaliser sport of adapted American Football which offers a level playing field for participants thanks to the variety of positions, each with its own skills and competencies. As a traditionally male sport, we challenge perceptions of what sport looks like for girls, and support physical literacy through enjoyment, confidence, competence, understanding and knowledge.
Through JagTag: Girls Together, we will target a new area of delivery and will support inactive girls aged 8-16 from all communities and low-income families in Birmingham and the West Midlands.
The NFL fanbase in the UK is as diverse as the country itself, and we know the Midlands is an area that many fans travel from to watch the London games and have a passion for the sport. From casual fans who enjoy watching the occasional game to die-hard supporters of their favourite teams, we would like to target this area via our community outreach to grow the Jaguars brand in the area.
We’ve chosen this demographic because we know from the Inequalities Metric and our own delivery experience, that a mix of practical, socioeconomic, and emotional barriers contribute to the physical activity gap at almost every age - a gap which is greater for girls from lower socio-economic groups and Black and South Asian communities.
Outcomes:
The outcomes of our programme are as follows:

- Increased enjoyment in sport and physical activity.
- Improved social connections for participants.
