Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Hillcrest School and Sixth Form Centre, we are committed to ensuring that every student feels valued, included and supported to achieve their full potential. Guided by our values of Work Hard, Be Kind, Aim High, we strive to remove barriers to learning and provide an environment where all students can thrive.

We recognise that students learn in different ways and may require different levels of support. Through high-quality teaching, adaptive classroom practice, effective pastoral care and specialist SEND provision, we ensure that students can access the curriculum, participate fully in school life and prepare successfully for adulthood.

Students' needs are identified through information from primary schools, assessment data, teacher observations and discussions with families. Support is provided through a graduated approach, beginning with high-quality classroom teaching and, where needed, progressing to targeted interventions and specialist support.

Our Inclusion Hub is at the heart of our support provision. Working closely with the SEND Team, pastoral staff and families, the Hub provides a nurturing environment for students who may need additional support with wellbeing, emotional regulation, attendance, social interactions or engagement with learning. Through mentoring, check-ins and personalised support, we help students build confidence, resilience and independence.

Students with SEND have a personalised profile which identifies their strengths, barriers to learning and effective classroom strategies. This helps teachers provide consistent support across all subjects and ensures that every student can experience success in the classroom.

We value the important role that parents and carers play and work in close partnership with families. By working together, we can ensure that support remains responsive to each student's needs and aspirations.

We also work alongside a range of external agencies, including Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, the Communication and Autism Team, Occupational Therapy and SENDIASS, to ensure students receive the specialist support they require.
